South Mission Beach Lifeguard Tower

A missed opportunity indeed. This incredible site deserved an icon, but instead, we are left with a brutalist guard tower suited for a maximum security prison.

The architects in this group have the ability to create real gems in our community, so I’d imagine this was a result of other parties involved in the planning and decision making.  Unfortunately, even the pubic art along the front looks like a thinly veiled attempt at deterring vagrants and beach-goers alike from congregating.

This could have been a more sincere contribution to the resiliency conversation while still offering a more friendly public interface. The dark palette and heavy shade canopy also lack refinement.
