This renovation of an existing science and administration building as a new home for the Mesa College Fine Arts Department started with a single voice within the San Diego Community College District saying “We should keep this building.”
Terracing down a hillside at the edge of campus, this four-story concrete building offers a campus connection at the top level and community connection at the lower level. It serves as a gateway to the campus and landmark to create a stronger connection for the Mesa College Art Department to the greater San Diego art community.
Super graphics were added to the exterior facade to differentiate the art building from other buildings on campus and new translucent facades allow for day lighting and views from the studios.
To keep the building relevant and timely, multiple illuminated or glazed walls throughout the project have been designated as “art walls” where students have the opportunity display and change the art periodically.
The program includes painting, drawing, ceramic and digital arts studios as well a sculpture studio with wood and metal shops. The building has two galleries to host events and provide a learning environment for the Mesa College museum studies program.
