Vertex is a biotechnology company that invests in scientific innovation to create transformative medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases, such as Cystic Fibrosis.
Locally, the San Diego research center has developed a tight-knit family of employees. Maintaining this strong connection and community was the more difficult design challenge, alongside functional constraints and rigorous technical requirements of a LEED gold science laboratory.
The design team resolved this by creating moments and intersections as employees move through the building. Amenities are centrally clustered, creating a social gravity that pulls scientists out of their offices and labs and into a communal space. To promote collaboration and wellness, departments are dispersed across the three floorplates and connected by a main staircase in order to cross pollinate and create ‘functional inconvenience’ to stimulate serendipitous employee interactions and increase movement.
Both interior and exterior glass throughout the project maximize access to outdoor views and natural light, as well as provide visual connectivity between labs, offices, and central spaces. To further promote inclusion with the surrounding community a dedicated Learning Lab allows access to guests, schools, universities, and employee families to use the facility and provides the opportunity to experience the science happening on site.
