Urge Gastropub & Common House

Urge Gastropub and Common House spans 21,000-square-feet of drinking, dining, brewing and gaming in North City, San Marcos. Originally a 1960’s old tilt-up warehouse, the inspiration for design was to create a modern play on industrial architecture, featuring highlights of reclaimed wood, iron works and raw/rusted steel.

The entry portico was a week long passion project, interlacing authentically varied depths and cuts of reclaimed wood from a barn carried in from Washington state. Corten steel dresses the exterior for a raw and rusted vibe. The original roll-up doors from the 1960s were methodically replaced throughout, either with new roll-ups to help join the inside & outside or fashioned with custom angle iron and glass to create large format window walls, adding a rich sunlight feature through most of the day.

The exterior patios feature custom concrete fire tables, infused with light blue glass rocks for a warm communal glow. Wrapped in ivy, iron trellis accents run overhead, while custom patterns of old chicago bricks run underfoot.

For patrons that come hungry, the inside dining tables are custom cold-rolled steel, distressed with a fire engine red, topped with black walnut – 100% hand-made in North Carolina. Larger groups can saddle up to the family style, community tables made from iron wood showcasing a living edge along one side. To help control sound levels, recycled cork tree bark from Miramar’s own CaliBamboo sits overhead.

For those who come to grab a beer, the bar features comfy leather couches paired with flat screen TVs. Overhead, just for a little juxtaposition, are London style street lamp fixtures for a proper touch. The full bar is wrapped in cold rolled steel and library ladders to take advantage of the high ceilings.

There are three individually unique private rooms for events, large groups, and plain good ol’ fun.

  • The Library – a large Victorian style room designed with help from Planks USA (Santa Ana, CA) and can host up to 50 guests. It features wall-to-wall bookcases, a faux fireplace, a long onyx bar top with build in LED lighting, full A/V capabilities and custom Victorian style artwork featuring Star Wars characters.
  • The Alley – after stepping up and through the front stoop, this smaller event space seats up to 25 guests, features barn-wood table tops from Oklahoma and vintage bowling alley photography. It includes full A/V capabilities which are almost unnecessary considering the windows that look into the fully custom bowling alley.
  • Bowling Alley – Owner, Grant Tondro is a major movie buff and The Big Lebowski is a top favorite flick. Now, he has his own Lebowski themed, 8-lane bowling alley adorned with an overabundance of unique features: custom Lebowski artwork donated by Chris Wise, custom furniture from Brunswick Bowling (that actually inspired an entirely new product line for them) and a custom penny-countertop for the themed White Russian cocktail bar (all individually laid in before being coated in resin). The bar itself is missing a back wall, but instead features large glass windows that let you peer into the attached 15 barrel-brewery and bottling line. Not to be out-done by the shining steel in the brewhouse, the bowling lanes themselves are a custom gunstock walnut finish, which highlight the uniquely billiard styled & numbered bowling balls.

Just in case bowling isn’t your cup of tea, the East side outer patio features two bocce courts, plus large format Jenga & Connect Four games. The family friendly patio includes large picnic tables for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

It’s a lot to digest. I suggest visiting personally, grabbing a fresh beer brewed onsite and taking a stroll around the property.

Great beer, great food, killer vibes, a Lebowski-themed bowling alley, an outdoor play area…. I love this place!

Love how the pub space opens out on the bold patterning of the common area – best looking fire lane I’ve ever seen! Food and beer are great too! This is the new go-to for food and fun in San Marcos.
