Tourmaline Properties office building

2079 Garnet Avenue is a complete overhaul and transformation of a decrepit piercing studio on the eastern fringes of the Pacific Beach commercial district into a freestanding office building for Tourmaline Properties, a local homebuilding company. Built in the Modern Farmhouse style, with a standing seam metal roof, white board and batten and Hardie Artisan lap siding, and bronze anodized aluminum casement windows by Western Window Systems, the building was designed to evoke the softness and warmth of a single-family residence, an appropriate facade for the offices of a homebuilding company. The interior features built-in desks and cabinetry in a residential shaker style and made from American black walnut, again to evoke the residential nature of the business housed there. Generously spaced bay windows flank both the first and second stories and rows of magnolia trees break up the long side facades, making the building a welcoming gateway to Pacific Beach, and a dramatic improvement on the original building, which was on the verge of being condemned.
