Historic Preservation

The Guild, downtown San Diego

The Guild is a hotel in the former Armed Services YMCA, a 1920s landmark in downtown San Diego. Its exterior has been thoroughly restored while the interior has kept some of the original elements of the Y while reimagining the spaces inside and out. The old basketball court and running track is now a banquet hall. The small parking lot in the rear is now an outdoor resting space, Grace Garden. And a courtyard restaurant, the Luca,  has been carved out of the space opposite The Guild bar with its Brazilian quartzite countertop. Most interesting is the basement conference space, carved out of the original pool.  Original ceramic tile remains in the staircase leading to the basement. The running track was retained in the gym/basketball court. There are several historic photos and an architectural blueprint on display.
