Architecture

San Diego International Airport Rental Car Center

This behemoth structure was left at San Diego’s door step.  It blocks classic views to the bay as one enters downtown and is in no way contextually representative of the city or region.  To add salt to this gaping wound,  open now for under a year now, the beveled surfaces on this enormous white structure are already accumulating sout making the structure resembling the home of the Sleestaks from Land of the Lost.  Ouch!!!

Haha! What a great comparison. It also blocks views from the Pacific Highway, which is sad because it this facility was desperately needed. Just look to Sea-Tac’s airport for how this project could have been done well.

SeaTac was designed by the same Architect and San Diego…

And don’t overlook the support posts which rather than being hidden by the facade, are tackily and poorly camouflaged by painting them a mismatched gray-black.

  • Rational Unintelligence

I would award this project an Onion for two simple reasons. One the buses drop off patrons on the upwind side of the building and never shut off their exhaust spewing engines. Said exhaust gases fill the rental car center to the point of which I almost have pity for the con artists working the counters. Second, there isn’t enough parking for vehicles waiting for locals returning cars at the rental car center. Oh the fun of circling the lot, hope quickly fades as another driver swoops in to take the one spot that opens up as you run another lap Jimmy Johnson style, endlessly turning left.
