Pine Avenue Recreation Center and Gardens, Carlsbad

The Pine Avenue Park Community Center and Gardens is designed to establish a new gateway to Carlsbad’s historic Barrio neighborhood and strengthen community linkage by connecting two distinct programs: a community center and a garden.

The Community Center on the northeast corner of the park, is a two-story, 18,000-square-foot facility inclusive of a large multi-purpose recreational space, meeting room and support spaces on the ground floor and a dedicated Teen Center with a lounge, homework rooms and outdoor balcony on the second floor.  Taking advantage of the mild climate, porches, long overhangs and balconies extend outward from the builidng to create shaded exterior rooms.

The 1.5 acre gardens on the southwest corner of the park, consist of an ornamental and a community garden.  The Ornamental Garden includes strolling pathways, public art and a wide promenade which serve as staging for community events.  The Community Garden is composed of raised planters tended by residents.  The gardens demonstrate sustainable gardening practices specifically tailored for coastal southern California and incorporates low water use, maintainable planting.

A common materials palette and design vocabulary are used to connect the new programs bookending the existing park into a cohesive whole.
