Pendry San Diego is the debut property from Pendry Hotels, a contemporary luxury hospitality brand from Montage International. Located in San Diego’s renowned Gaslamp Quarter, the hotel’s design strikes a stunning balance between modern and traditional design, pairing classic Southern California surf scene influences with luxury touches.
Guests are welcomed through the main lobby which exudes luxurious grandeur with Etruscan concrete tile floors and coffered wood ceilings, and a surreal chandelier with a bronze birdcage mounted to a driftwood boom and bronze counterweight. Guests check in at a custom welcome desk wrapped in hand-formed, polished aluminum panels, reminiscent of vintage airplane fuselage. Rich wooden accents can be found in the reception area that is defined by a barrel ceiling vault finished in warm English oak. Situated beside the lobby is Fifth & Rose—the hotel’s elevated bar and lounge featuring vintage eccentricities including an iron chandelier fabricated from hundreds of vintage glass lenses.
The guest room experience, a defining feature of the hotel, offers modern design paired with classic fabrics. The most notable element is the transparent glass and steel shower which opens the bathroom to the entire room. A retractable soft linen drapery shields the shower for privacy while also transmitting light in and out. Plush sofas are patterned in the Pendry Hotels signature tartan fabric in regal shades of blue with gold accents. Warm neutral finished furnishings, and rich mahogany and leather headboards lend a sense of welcome calm to the spaces. Another unique feature in the guestrooms is a custom wall covering which showcases surf-inspired imagery, camouflaged within another traditional pattern – only apparent once the guest slows down to take notice.
