Gensler Studio

When Gensler moved their studio to the ground floor of an iconic downtown tower, they hoped to break the mold by creating a “jewel box” workplace visually and physically connected to the city. The dynamic, multi-level creative studio reflects the firm’s beliefs and culture by putting staff well-being, community involvement, and collaboration at the center of the design. The transparent office creates a powerful first impression for visitors and passerby’s, fosters connections with the local community in the urban realm, provides flexible spaces for internal and community events, showcases the firm’s creative designs, and empowers design teams.

The Gallery is located on the most visible corner of 225 Broadway and adjacent to the main entrance. Designed for everything from large events, speaking engagements, and client touch points, the Gallery is a flexible space where the firm interfaces with the community at large. Since opening, Gensler has hosted more than 20 community events and more than 2,000 visitors have passed through this dynamic space

To support the firm’s collaborative culture, Gensler carved out a section of the second floor to allow a flowing grand stair to connect the ground floor and second-floor workspace. The mid landing of the stair is a cantilevered extension of a new mezzanine that houses a vast resource library. More informal gathering areas are anchored by the central stair and give teams choice in whether to work in the inviting Kitchen, the informal Family Room, or on an outdoor roof terrace overlooking the historic Horton Plaza Park.

Gensler’s commitment to health and wellbeing was integral to the design strategies for the new workspace. The centerpiece of the design is a passive natural ventilation system that allows the studio to enjoy fresh air and free cooling 75% of the year, unplugged from the building’s VAV system. Other wellness features including sit/stand desks for everyone, office bikes, showers, lockers, and healthy nutritional food options round out Gensler’s support for a healthy work environment.
