OncoSec Medical wanted their new building to represent their values, culture, and entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore, the design approach had to create an environment that would increase creativity, stimulate innovation, and encourage collaboration; while also promoting synergies between the research and operational functions.
The result is an exhilarating facility that is a bright, warm, open, highly detailed, contemporary space with dramatic geometric forms that also symbolize shapes and forms of the R&D industry.
The laboratories were arranged in the two stories at the back of the building with full height windows on both levels into the labs to provide a visual connection to the administrative functions. The open office space was located along the front in the two-story volume were natural light penetrates deep into the space. Private offices were grouped along the north and south exterior walls with full height windows allowing sight lines into the labs and open office area creating an environment that is a hybrid of semipermeable public-private spaces woven into a functional setting. The break area has a large roll-up glass door that opens to an exterior courtyard providing indoor and outdoor amenity space.
The project was a success due McFarlane Architects engaging all team members in the design process by encouraging all to share their creativity, knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for the project, along with the vision of OncoSec Medical and support of Alexandria Real Estate Equities.
