Covering up of Wyland Whale Mural

The Wyland Whale Mural on the side of the U.S. Bank building (formerly San Diego National Bank) will be covered up completely due to the development of another highrise in our downtown. This 22 story high rise apartment building, Ariel Suites, is currently under construction and will soon cover up one of the only examples of public art we have left in our downtown. Estimated completion 2013. The mural will survive, though it may not be visible as before from the north on Kettner. Interestingly, the rendering of the proposed development from the west shows the mural as visible and even seems to include a copy of it on the lower portion of the west facade to give the illusion of a complete mural. Whether this will actually be reality, we will have to wait and see.
