Even before its embrace of the giant statue "Unconditional Surrender" (aka "The Kiss"), the Port District demonstrated its questionable taste with a new sign at the entrance to Shelter Island. This new sign is a confused mish-mash of styles and materials (aluminum, travertine tile, LED lighting, a waterfall(!)) reminiscent of something out of the 80s.

Shelter Island has one of the best preserved collections of 1950s and 60s Tiki/Hawaiiana-style buildings in the world and is a truly unique and special place. But the new sign completely ignores this history and the homogenous, Polynesian style of the surrounding buildings.

It's a disgrace that this was allowed to be built. It shows a complete lack of regard for the historic preservation of this special place.
