Finn Hall deserves an Orchid in Architecture and Sustainable Design. The new dormitory is part of the United States Navy's "Homeport Ashore" initiative to create residential communities for bachelor enlisted sailors when they are not at sea. Located adjacent to a golf course, with rooftop lounges that provide residents with views of San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the building is provided with basketball and sand volleyball courts, a PAR fitness course, and barbecue shelters and outdoor assembly areas. These are NOT your father's barracks. The residential modules have two living/sleeping rooms and each module has its own bathroom, kitchen, dining area, and washer/dryer. While meeting all of the Navy's strict anti-terrorist/force protection design criteria and space standards, this LEED Gold certified building has a non-institutional character and and the warm feeling of a real home. This is a building that truly lets our sailors know that we are grateful for their service.

Finn Hall exceeds California energy standards by 40% and includes water conservation measures that reduce water usage by over 35%. Housing 1,052 sailors, the residential hall was built for $65 Million and was completed ahead of schedule and on-budget, and was constructed without any lost-time injuries.
