El Take It Easy is a farm to table Mexican restaurant and bar in North Park. As part of North Park's latest surge in night life and food life, El Take It Easy has settled in as one of the coolest spots in the neighborhood. The concept for the design was inspired by concrete ruins of old buildings and cantinas throughout Mexico. The highlight of the space is a 100% recycled wall made up of recycled polycarbonate panels and 2x8 wood ceiling joists that were removed from the ceiling of the existing building. The wall is internally lit using rope light LED fixtures. When removing the existing ceiling finish and joists, the existing barrel roof and steel trusses were discovered to be in great condition so it became important to highlight the ceiling space and celebrate the existing structure. The bartop is a cast-in-place concrete top with the hardware from existing framing reused and cast into the bartop. Since it's opening in 2010, the space and design has organically transformed with the needs of its clientele and Owner, creating neighborhoods within the space. A partial height wall now divides the open space, creating a more intimate bar area and hinged openings in the entry wall were added to provide indoor/outdoor seating, connecting the neighborhood to the interior. Whether the event is a dance party, "Bacon Bingo", or jazz night, it was important that the space be flexible and transformable, much like the food and cocktails change with the seasons, bringing fresh local food and design to the local patron.

Hmm, I dunno... I think it looks enticing from the outside and the interior is pretty cool- nice materials etc, but overall I think this place is overrated. I have been here a couple of times and think that the acoustics are really bad (which is not so fun for being in a group), the lighting is too dim (I get the ambiance factor, but here it is hard to make out someone's face if you are sitting towards the back, and most of all the food and drinks are overpriced. Other nearby restaurants do farm to table better... and cheaper. Oh yeah and why is it always pretty empty?! Yeah, maybe design wise it's pretty cool, but def not my fave neighborhood bar/food place or hang out.

If anyone was in this place when the previous restaurant was there, you know what a testament this design is to "addition by subtraction". Remove the carpet, drop ceiling, and drywall and voila! Then just add a few classy touches (big comfy booths, poured concrete bar, osb walls, etc. and it's complete.

The conscientious, thoughtful design of El Take it Easy really strikes a wonderful balance of casual and comfortable, rustic but modern. It reflects the unique mileau of border culture in which we live and eat, and fully inspires communal gathering around the most fundamental element of that cultural collision: fantastic, whimsical food. Great work!

I love the new renovation of EZ! It wasn't too drastic but it made all the difference in the world. Opening the space up to the sidewalk traffic and expanding the patio just brought a subtle but amazing transformation. Also, thier cocktails are sublime!
