Located in a basement originally used for storage, Vin de Syrah has turned the wine bar concept upside down. Literally. Whether it’s the sprawling 75 year old wine vines with antique glass goblets magically suspended in mid-air, spinning “Magritte inspired” parasols or flashing LED lightning bugs captured inside dangling mason jars, this subterranean garden evokes a sense of playfulness, whimsy and fantasy. Inspired by movies like Mary Poppins, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Alice in Wonderland, Syrah’s lavish atmosphere ultimately became an exercise in ingenuity. Transforming unfavorable existing conditions (no natural sunlight, concrete floors, massive support columns in the center of the room and exposed electrical and plumbing) into something attractive and inviting was challenging, to say the least. Ultimately, unlike other establishments boasting 1-2 million dollar renovation budgets and prime street side locations, Syrah's design directive was driven by the craft, creativity and resourcefulness of its design crew. Simple, inventive solutions were essential. Inexpensive found objects such as used wine barrels were transformed into a grand chandelier; bird lamp finials served as purse hooks and throw rugs were sewn into plush lounge pillows for the central settee. Stacked clay pots from IKEA form the tasting table partitions, reclaimed barn wood planks clad the bar and a $75 wallpaper mural of a tree-lined grass path was framed and illuminated in the sitting room to give the effect of a picture window. Theatrical spotlights cast seductive shadows reminiscent of dappled moonlight, and high gloss paint combined with an abundance of mirrors provide a refractive, ethereal quality throughout. Illusory and somewhat deceptive, the mirrors amplify the rooms volume yet also provide guests with a fluid sense of connectivity to the entire space. From the Graffiti and wheat pasted entry with the hidden door made of artificial hedge, to the delicate moss and glittered butterflies found amongst the concrete grouted walls, guests experience an array of contrasting, yet complimentary materials and sensibilities. Artfully combined, these humble yet clever elements invite guests to enjoy a respite from the bustling chaos of the Gaslamp street side above. But what is most magical is that the 3,500 sq ft room was completed in under 10 weeks, by a construction crew primarily made up of less than 6 people and all for under $250,000. I work at The Gaslamp Plaza Suites and The Vin de Syrah has been an extra added bonus to our Resort. Our Guests' have the feel of a real "hideaway" The Vin de Syrah is tucked away from the busy streets of everyday life and no one would know you were there (unless invited:) and it makes for a wonderful conversation piece from the interior design to the fabulous selections of wines and spirits. Not to mention the meat and cheese boards to go along with them. Congrats to Michael and the entire Staff at the Vin de Syrah. This place makes life worth living!!!

Michael Soriano is a master at transforming space into an environment that changes the mind-set of those who step within. At Vin de Syrah the mystical transformation begins as you make your way down the stairs going from day / night light to the enchanting setting below. The textures, colors, lighting and imaginative details blend together to make the space like no other!

Syrah has become one of the few places I actually enjoy going to in the Gaslamp. Though the crowd and intensity varies from night to night, the design is truly one-of-a-kind and surely a special treat for anyone who ventures down an unsuspecting flight of stairs on the corner of 5th and E. Finding the door handle among walls covered in a faux organic texture can be tricky but it provides for endless entertainment if you watch people trying to figure it out on the monitors from inside the bar. In any case, fantasy, nature, whimsy, and "green" design all come together in a cohesive manner that highlights some of the most innovative choices in materials, fixtures, and applications that one could find in a district reknowned for it's revolving door of nightlife environments with bland concepts and douchey (yeah, I said it) crowds. Designer, Michael Soriano never fails to dissapoint and his projects, are always interesting and eye-catching yet redically different.

In a sea of "Been There, Seen That" lounges, Michael Soriano and team restore a sense of whimsy and playfulness just when we all need it most (and at an unbelievable low cost!). You can't help but smile at every turn in this like-no-other subterranean wonderland.

Vin de Sarah is unlike anything I have ever experienced before. From the moment you begin the descend down the stairs, you start to realize that your evening will be something magical and different. When I opened the door, I felt like I was in the scene from Willy Wonker when they enter the amazing land of candy……anticipation coupled with the unexpected. The entire place is an assault on the senses and is continually presenting new and wonderful “things” to take in and devour. What a great place to make you feel like a kid while enjoying the pleasures of adulthood. Great job Mr. Soriano!!!

Syrah is a wonderous place to get lost in. There are so many visual aspects of the place, I was at the bar for an hour just enjoying my drink and looking around the room at all the details. I noticed the lighting in this place. There are so many different types of lighting accenting the decor, it must have taken a mastermind designer and a team of electricians to get it all right. This is a great place to impress out of town guests. I would never have imagined to find somehting so amazing in a basement bar.

It is said that you cannot "buy" style. With a limited budget and construction timeframe, the only way that Syrah could "afford" to offer a comparable destination property was to embrace and glorify it's quirky underground character. Turning lemons into lemonade was the teams mantra and simple hand crafted, inventive solutions triumphed over showy, expensive technological excess. Blood, sweat and tears became the mortar for the building materials and the end result looks like a million bucks.
