I agree with those who wonder why this isn't in the "Onion" rather tahn the "Ochid" category! While it might be "grand" and appeal to the "Chamber of Commerce" folks who want more biz/money to come to SD, how is it innovative or interesting in design? Golf course? Rape the environment and then call it "sensitive"? Spare no expense in materials and labor and call it "so attentive to detail? Marble from around the world and and call it "classical"?
While it might be impressive, even grand, it escapes me how it can be included here.

This new hotel is beautiful and sounds to be an enormous property. But what makes it different then every other ginormous hotel in the world? Its vastness? Where are the sustainable features and the environmentally conscience building techniques? Haven't we all realized we have to do our part in order to preserve our world and by extension our lives?? Maybe the CEO who spent millions of dollars building this monstrosity didn't get the memo....

The Grand Del Mar Resort is truely one of the finest luxury hotels in the world. We should be honored to have this wonderful amenity in our community and acknowledge it's design and attention to detail with an Orchid Award.

I think the project should be judged on the merits of it's design--that is, all those abstract comments about form, proportion, complexity, rhythm, space, and how the design is developed in relation to it's original concept. In addition, I often hear various projects in San Diego touted as "world-class," or aiming for that distinction. On these counts The Grand is obvious success.
The design as a whole is a faithful and inspired extension of it's Mizner roots. Details? The project shines not only in the general layout of elements, but in its; fantastic assemblage of details, shown in the carpentry, wall surfaces, floors, ironwork, and tilework. More than many projects, there is also a strong relationship between the indoors and outdoors--gardens extend interior views and numerous axial relationships are exploited at both the architectural and landscape architectural level. It may disappoint the naysayers, but the fact is, this project is truly world-class--there are barely others in San Diego that reach this level of detail, quality of construction and materials, and ultimate execution. I don't see a lot of VE compromises out there.
San Diego really needs to recognize this project and seek to lift itself higher in the qualities of design I've mentioned above.
PS, they planted 10,000 trees as a part of the work. So far I haven't seen that little detail as a component of any other submissions.

A fantastic 5 star hotel in a quiet sleeply little area of Carmel Del Mar. The architecture is beautifully designed with fabulously detailed interiors. The landscape is a work of art with meticulously designed hedges, flowering shrubs, handsome specimen trees, gazebos, enhanced pavers for circulating throughout the grounds. There are sculptures and water features throughout the place. A great stroll after dineer and a night-cap! This place has everything, spa, tennis courts, exercise trails, two pools with gacuzees and even one of the best Tom Fazio golf courses around. Go see it for yourself!!

This resort truly is "GRAND" in its interiors as well as landscaping. Need more 5 star resorts such as this in the San Diego area. The staff is also very friendly and top notch. It is an Orchid for sure!!

I support The Grand Del Mar Resort to receive an Orchid Award this year. Since the opening a few years ago, I have been going there regularly to enjoy the wonderful restaurants for special occasions as well as experiencing all of the "world class" amenities the resort offers during occasional weekend get aways. I think from a design view point, the GDM makes an honest expression of what it is and what it does...a world class resort which romantically transports you to another place and time where one can escape today's lifestyle challenges...if only for a weekend. It is not trying to overtly address todays social/economic or enviornmental issues. The Grand Del Mar is not for everyone but my guess is that most San Diegeans would agree that it is beautifully designed with a sense of charm and romance and deserves an Orchid Award.

Finally a resort in San Diego worthy of five-stars. The Grand Del Mar is truly a beautiful, luxurious resort where you feel as though you have been transported to a European estate with an aura of a different time but with modern amentities. The architecture is outstanding and reflects the site and the goal of creating a classic Addison Mizner inspired resort. The detailing and quality of the project is what sets this apart from others... it is truly an orchid and a jewel in the San Diego community.

This is a great "destination" resort, and although you may not agree with the nomination for an Orchid, the attention to detail does give it credibility. Go check it out and then make your comments. If the scenery, details, food, service, and even the architecture does not impress you on some level then I would be surprised. Do I think it is Orchid worthy, I don’t know, but it is a nice project.

This resort has all the amenities to truly bring the 5 star experience to San Diego, but that could not be done without the world class design and attention to detail. This resort is "One of a Kind" for San Diego!

We are fortunate to have this world class resort located in San Diego. The beauty, attention to detail, and placement with regard to the surrounding area creates a relaxing atmosphere. There are spaces for family gathering, romantic anniversaries, worship, sports & exercise, and corporate events all uniquely situated to offer privacy and functionality.
Definitely an Orchid.

The Grand is an absolutely beautiful project. The architecture is fantastic; the attention to detail is wonderful. The rooms are generous and have all the amenities of a 5 star resort. When you are at the resort, you feel like you have been transported to another location...I love that it does not feel like San Diego anymore! I would go back in a heart beat.

The Grand Del Mar is an exceptionally beautiful resort property. It's a jewel in our community. I've visited there several times and each time am quite taken by the attention to details, the materials used and the warmth and charm of the hotel, restaurants and resort as a whole. The Grand Del Mar definitely deserves an Orchid!

This is a grandiose monstrosity it is terribly dark, full of goo-gahs. As if that were the goal, it has all the colors of marble in the palette.
It is a design held-over from an opulent, egotistical past, clearly only for the extremely, self-importantly wealthy. Not a positive social statement here!

You obviously are not sophisticated enough to recognize classical architecture. The Grand Del Mar is reminiscent of the Palm Beach estates designed famed architect Addison Mizner. Not all architecture today has to be boring, overdone "innovative" and contemporary. You are probably the type to wear flip flops, t-shirts and cargo shorts to dinner. When you get some class you will begin to recognize good design.

Only someone without an education in design would think that this uninspired, overdone reproduction was a modern architectural masterpiece. It does not have to be minimal or "contemporary" architecture to be interesting and there are many reproductions and reinterpretations of classical architecture that are beautifully done. The true genius of classical architecture was the use and understanding of spatial relationships and proportions. Their legacy and what makes those buildings so awesome and timeless was not just slapping on some marble and putting in some columns, but rather the emotions evoked from the spaces they created. To talk about "class" and appreciation of the classical one must really understand what it was that they were doing and why and not just assume that any building that mimicks their decorations is of the same quality. Read a few dozen books on classical architecture and go to Italy and spend a few months drawing and sketching the classical buildings and then you may be able to begin to label yourself as "sophisticated enough to recognize classical architecture".

I am a little surprised this ostentatious thing isn't up for an onion. The entry in dark marble looks like a mausaleum. The whole thing is kitsch and too much of it.
This is a rare 5 star destination golf, tennis and spa resort for San Diego county that draws its scale, context and landscaping from a combination of the natural habitat that surrounds the resort and the rich archtitectural history of Tuscany Villas that the early 20th Century Architect, Addison Mizner popularized on the east coast. Visit the resort at sunset to appreciate the shadows, texture and ambiance of the juxtaposition of the canyons, golf course and hotel.

1922 called from the East Coast and they want their Tuscanate architecture back. What business does this have being built this day and age? I imagine this is where people go when they need to escape their McMansions.

disgusting... What will they build next a golden sphinx? The only redeeming aspect of this project is the amount of laborers that it must have taken to complete this garish work.
