DPR Construction San Diego Office

DPR has taken a typical San Diego suburban office building nearing obsolescence and turned it into a forward thinking, sustainable, and vibrant new office space. The rehabilitation of the 1978 Governor Park one story tilt-up building is a great example of the potential of the San Diego inventory of existing buildings. “Bringing the Outside In” was the theme for this remodel, which was designed and constructed to achieve Net Zero Energy and LEED Platinum.

Taking advantage of San Diego’s mild climate, the building was designed to use natural cross-ventilation and daylight to cool and light the office. This was achieved by constructing roof monitors or clerestories on the south side of the roof to balance the north façade of curtain wall and create a spectacular volume of light over the main traffic corridor. North and south operable windows create the passive stack effect of ventilation. This strategy reduced the HVAC and lighting energy consumption by 51% better than a typical Title 24 compliant space.

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” directed the decision-making for materials. 95% of the structural walls, slab, and roof deck intact in the new design as well as most of the existing curtain wall. Reuse of materials from the site and other sites were used throughout such as, doors, frames, windows, casework, desks, steel, finish wood, and structural lumber. High recycled content materials were selected throughout such as carpet, tile, drywall, metal studs, and composite wood, and more than 80% of the new wood used was FSC Certified lumber.

The theme of “Bringing the Outside In” is as much about creating a quality environment as it is about saving energy. All employees have access to views and outside air as there are few walls to impede access to perimeter glazing to the north, northwest, and southern facing roof monitors. Many aspects of DPR’s culture are thoughtfully designed into the space. The open office environment, the wine bar, the commitment and respect for the environment as well as the environment created for the employees: all are intentional reflections of DPR’s culture. Even the surfboards behind the reception desk are carefully selected representations of DPR’s four core values. The new DPR office respects the employees and the San Diego community and could potentially influence others how to create space that better fits the San Diego environment.

Awesome!

This is a gorgeous space that seamlessly integrates the latest in green building design. They deserve an Orchid!

Please influence the rest of the building industry!

Thanks DPR, I am HOPING that the building Industry assn takes note and starts to see that they are giving us garbage and they need to step it up. Thank you for actually taking pride in your work. All these developers should have to put their signs up and stand behind and take ownership of their work rather than hiding behind LLCs where they cant be found or blamed.

sustainable measures incorporated

We were all extremely impressed with DPR's sustainable measures incorporated into the facility. As instructors in architecture, we are trying, through our new Sustainability in the Built Environment class, to make our students aware of the need to design sustainably. Equally as important is the need for good design aesthetics. Your offices are a great example of both of these coming together in the creation of a very interesting and exciting workplace for your team. I know that I would certainly be excited to work place in such a wonderful environment.

And I never want to leave after the meeting!

DPR Office Remodel

It is a very nice space and it has a wonderful feel. You have to go in to really understand and appreciate it.

DPR always takes it to a new level. Great job!

DPR Office

This office space took "green" concepts in thoughtful and creative directions. It's a very inviting place to visit.

I attend regular project

I attend regular project meetings in this office and I look forward to them every time. It is a comfortable and pleasant space to work in and I think it's a beautiful addition to San Diego. Congratulations DPR!

new DPR office

The new office design is very dynamic. I couldn't think of a better environment to work. The unique details really add a lot to the overall feel of the place. I love the material combinations used in a variety of locations throughout the office. Beautiful job!

DPR office space

What a great office space! I wish I could work there. I can see it would be a lot of fun to work for a company that designs this kind of work space. I would work for half price to get a chance to have this kind of work environment.

DPR's new office

DPR's new office is one of the best designed, most functional, and greenest offices I have ever been in. The Pacific northwest styling fits right in here in San Diego and has a feeling of openness that puts its occupants at ease. It is also one of the few office buildings I can think of that takes advantage of the San Diego climate and offers fresh air cross-breezes and natural light, which also reduces the need for air conditioning and other energy demands. The fact that it is green-compliant is the icing on the cake. Who wouldn't want to work there?

DPR Construction San Diego Office

It's clear from DPR's actions that they're a company focused on people and relationships. An investment like this shows that the company is focused on respect towards their employees, clients, and the environment. Aside from the huge impact a building like this has on the individual that works within the space, it highlights an enormous, and mostly un-tapped market sector- showing that the life of a building can be extended almost exponentially. On a very simple, smart business sort of level, it shows that DPR walks the talk on the environmental side of things. That means a lot to clients, both current and future.

LOVE IT!!

I would love to work there!!

Creative, Modern, Exciting

DPR's new office is an outstanding example of taking an older building and turning it into something modern and sustainable, ultimately creating a great work environment for employees. I had the chance to see the building first hand at the open house event. I love how they stayed true to their company culture and incorporated creative design features throughout the building. I thought they did a great job!

Great Space!

I was fortunate enough to get an invitation to their Open House this past May. What a fantastic space! I can only imagine what it would be like to work in such a warm and open surrounding. Everywhere you look there are cool and wonderful details. The challenge has been issued for the rest of us to aspire towards.

Innovative and Eco-Friendly

The new DPR office is not only aesthetically appealing, it incorporates many sustainable attributes. The open lighting and ventilation systems add to the fresh environment while the wine bar reflects the fun and friendly culture of the company. Kudos to DPR for creating such a remarkable work space!

Beautiful!

These offices are truly beautiful! It is wonderful to see new remodeling and construction aiming to achieve high sustainable goals. You can't do much better than Net Zero Energy and LEED Platinum!

DPR office space

The new office space of DPR is amazing. I went there for a meeting and fell in love with the energy and open feel. The space is casual, modern, and definitely brings the outside in the with fresh air and natural light. The space has a uniquely San Diegan feel with the wood, colors and surfboards(not to mention the meeting rooms named after famous surf spots). One of the best features is the fully stocked wine bar to encourage comradery between co-workers and even their clients.

Bringing the Outside In

Not to be missed! This is truly a gem at every level. They set the bar high for the rest of the industry and the community. It's one thing to build green new, this is really what green building should be all about.
