Capstone Advisors' Corporate Headquarters

Capstone Advisors’ new corporate headquarters is a true reflection of the owner’s philosophy and character, both professional and personal. John McCulley, Principal of McCulley Design and Alex Zikakis, Founder and President of Capstone Advisors combined their respective talents to give new life to the interior of this 9,000 square foot office space located in North Carlsbad. Reflecting on the primary objective of the office space’s interior design, Mr. Zikakis commented, “We worked very closely with McCulley Design to design our offices to reflect the way we work – in an open, cooperative, team oriented environment. Since we spend so much of our lives at work, we designed our office space to be as comfortable and inviting as possible. I consider our office a combination of professional office space and a casual clubhouse.”

The building’s core has a somewhat industrial appearance, with 22 foot exposed ceilings, natural finish tilt-up concrete walls, exposed HVAC ducting and drop lighting, a combination that posed an interesting challenge. A colorful palette of earth tones, accented with deep reds, cool blues and authentic recycled bamboo flooring emits a truly artistic feeling when entering the space. Sophisticated, progressive and energetic, the Modernist architectural design is accentuated selected pieces of art from Mr. Zikakis’ personal collection. The most prominent piece of art is a backlit, continuously printed photographic image of the Island of Kauai. At 120 square feet, it is the largest light box mounted photographic image of its kind in the Western United States.

According to Mr. Zikakis, “One of the limitations of the interior of the building is the lack of windows along one of its main walls. We worked with legendary photographer Aaron Chang to turn the wall into a fantastic “window” that looks directly onto the North Shore of Kauai. The result is breathtaking and the piece immediately became a main focal point of the interior of the building.” Intentional arrangement of interior spaces purposefully integrate the interior office areas with natural light which fills and embraces the space from skylights in the high ceiling above and the floor to ceiling glass walls at the front and rear of the space.

New visitors repeatedly comment on the sense of professionalism and individuality that the space projects due to the openness, rich natural materials, contrasting colors and artwork. Employees truly enjoy coming to work, finding that the space engages the senses, is physically comfortable, and fosters an interactive productive environment. Whether it is the workspaces, the meeting areas, gym or the outdoor patio (which acts as an extended office space as well as the location for frequent company barbeque lunches) Capstone’s associates feel connected to the company. “There is a sense of balance, identity and purpose working here” shares one associate. Unlike a more traditional corporate office, this office feels entrepreneurial yet at the same time it feels institutional and professional. These are important images for visiting clients,” shares another.

Sustainability is an important component of Capstone’s philosophy and it was a key objective in the space’s interior design. This objective was met by the use of renewable and recycled materials, the use of energy and water efficient fixtures and the integration of green practices into everyday policy and procedures. Capstone’s building has qualified for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star designation. In addition, Capstone has registered the building for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver designation and expects certification by January 2010. Once obtained Capstone’s building will be one of only two “existing” office buildings in San Diego County to achieve a LEED Silver certification.

A Breath of Fresh Air

McCulley has done it again- the perfect balance of color, materials and products create a space for his customers to shine! McCulley's designs continue to be timeless with a "twist."

wow!

I was absolutely blown away by the design and feel of this space! John is so very talented. The materials were perfect. I'd call it "edgy eco" like only McCulley could execute! Congrats, Margo

Great Design

What a gorgeous space, great design.I love the open spacing and the beautiful color scheme. The front desk layout is really cool and inviting.McCulley has a talent for office space design.

This is a must see space!

A facility should reflect the company’s image and philosophy, but more importantly should support the way people work within this environment. This facility addresses how people work, the company’s processes and technology, all come together to support the company’s vision and business goals. John McCulley is one of the most forward thinkers in San Diego relating to interior work environments. The Capstone Advisors project showcases his talents. Jose Marquez G/M Business Interiors

The big picture

After reading the overview and other comments written there are many things to applaud. The first is to recognize that Capstone is not only the user but also the building owner. This means that this is a company that recognizes the power of design and use of sustainable materials is a solid return on investment not just in monetary ways but in the people who work there. This is also a powerful message to clients and the public regarding the principals of the company. The second kudo is to McCulley in the translation of Capstone's culture. There is nothing superficial in the design. I think this is why so many people have written comments because the space feels like a place you would want to hang out with your friends (a 'clubhouse' was a good term used). And thirdly San Diego is critiqued as not having a 'design style'. It appears that designers are always using other regions identities ( I like what someone said below about trendy white-on-white and going color blind). This is not a La La Land design. It is not New York. It is by a San Diego Designer for a San Diego based company and it feels just right.

Smart, sexy design

What a pleasure it would be to work in this environment! Beautiful design, gorgeous material selection, handsome lighting fixtures and a spot on scale. McCulley nailed it again!

New Capstone Headquarters by McCulley Design

I have seen other projects by McCulley Design. They are all unique and extremely professional. This one is no exception. The overall look is perfect for the building. What a great work environment!

Wow, I could live there!

What a fantastic space. I love the layout, materials and colors used in this office. An important factor in retaining and attracting talent is the environment they work in. I am sure Capstone will be a coveted site by top talent. The positive, creative energy just shoots off the page. Congratulations to Capstone and McCulley Design!

The design of the

The design of the headquarters creates an inviting, creative environment. The thoughtful design, attention to detail, and material selection give the simple industrial building a modern and warm aesthetic.

Capstone Headquarters

Wow!!!! I absolutely love this space, even though I am a traditionalist. It is soothing and yet so full of vibrant color, and the flow of materials is exciting---you want to see what is around the next corner. McCulley may make me love contemporary design yet!!

Capstone

I really like the contrast of the cool and warm colors. Each area seems to have an idenity of its own, but blends well with the one next to it. I love the art on the wall of the mountains. It stands out being mixed with the beautiful clean lines of the rest of the design.

Capstone Space

The Capstone space has a warmth and intimacy about it that is challenging to create in suburban office. The material choices compliment the organic setting while blending the confident and bold contemporary art and furnishings. The space embodies the "healthy lifestyle work place" of today in a comfortable inviting and professional setting.

This deserves an Orchid!

This is really a beautiful, artful space. It's a perfect combination of gorgeous natural and organic materials with sleek, clean architectural lines. I also love the strategic use of art and the accent of warm painted surfaces. It also brings the outdoors in and the indoors out, in the best architectural tradition.

Capstone Project

I really like the use of mixed materials and the generous open space plan. The bold colors work perfectly at defining each of the spaces. It's light and warm, perect for a SoCal office. Great job McCulley Design!!!

A Paradox of Perfection

The space looks as though it was originally very warehouse-y, large, high ceilings, with lots of cement. A great subliminal metaphor for "advisors", strong, sturdy and conservative. The designer brought life to an otherwise harsh, stark canvas by bringing in natural elements of wood, plants, and imagery of the island scape, all of which incorporate the beauty of the outside landscaping which is invited inside by the massive windows in what looks like the entry way. I absolutely love the textures used on the floors whether carpeting or otherwise, vs. the "flat" finish of the temporary and concrete walls. I appreciate the designer's nod to feng shui through out- the space is clearly functional, but now it is so beautiful, stunning even and probably a delight to work in.

Capstone - A revolutionary design

This project is an excellent example of McCulley's unique, fresh and future forward aesthetic. The concept of the buildings within a building is so interesting. This approach is holistically and visual appealing as well as environmentally conscious, which is so important when investing in a work or living space. The natural light streaming through out the space and clean lines of the furnishings and materials seem effortless. Though it is very apparent that the layout, color palette, textures and fixtures are well edited. What a great workplace!

Capstone Project

I really like the open floor plan and use of various textures. The space is welcoming and comfortable to occupy and visit. Cheers.

Stunning

Absolutely gorgeous. I love the mix and balance between colors and textures. Transitions between interior spaces and between exterior/interior are also very well done. Love the organic look and feel of the space. Kudos!

Working in paradise...sign me up!

I don't know anything about design but I'd like to spend my work days in this office! Warm colors, natural textures, comfortable furniture and beautiful images = happy, productive employees! And eco-friendly, sustainable too. Well done. It conjurs the feeling of what we mean when we talk about "quality of life." How amazing to have a work space reflect our enviable San Diego lifestyle.

Gorgeous Textures

What a beautiful, inviting space. Love the textures as you move from element to element in the pictures. Visually stimulating and how cool is it to be one of two current LEED certified office building. I hope many other developers are going in this direction.

Organic and Modern

I absolutely love the feel of this space! Organic elements combines with modern, streamlined surfaces. It's a space that one would love to spend all day in - and could definitely get the creative juices flowing! I also really like the way the huge spaces are separated and organized but still feel open and airy! Love love love

Clean Lines

I love the clean lines and openness of this space with its nod to it's industrial beginnings. The modernist aestetic draws your attention to the simplicity and honesty of the materials and creates what feels like a productive, collaborative enviroment. Bravo!

Capstone

Beautiful lines, use of color, proportion, choice of materials...John McCulley uses these design elements in spaces as an artist uses a brush on canvas. Capstone employees and clients are fortunate to work and conduct business in a 3-dimensional work of art.

capstone

john mcculley has a grasp of style, color and form that is unsurpassed....and this project shows it in spades.... bold and functional....capstone are big time money guys and this space says i am on the leading edge of the curve, but not so full of myself as to not understand wealth preservation -- elegant and subtle with a touch of "you talking to me, are you talking to me ?" love it

Fantastic Space

Great space - really nice casual aesthetic. I really love the almost residential feel to the conference room - carpet and chairs work well together. Great synergy with materials and pops of color. Echoing a previous comment - Every "cutting edge" space I have seen lately is white, white and more white, I'm getting snowblind! Beautiful art as well I have seen some great work out of McCulley in the past - it's nice to know he's still on top of his game Two thumbs up to Capstone and McCulley Design!

Capstone Advisors

Great design and feel! My office looks like a gray box. I will be heading down to Sherwin Williams to get some color or better yet I will call the designer of this office. Envious, Dan

capstone project

I love the use of color, texture and light to reflect the business environment of Capstone Advisors. It is a clear message to prosepctive customers/clients that they reflect the culture of business communication with an eye toward the future. They are adapting to the changing requirements of a successful business and an increased ability to cater to their clients varied needs.

capstone advisors space

the thing i like about this space is that it is not "slick". it feels grounded. many work interiors try too hard to be hip, glossy, reflective, white on white (am i at a bar?)...etc. this is a place that i would like to come to work on a daily basis. also looks also like it has some surf culture and still seems professional but casual/conversational. the bamboo flooring is great and is a nice contrast to the wood reception desk. the colors also have nice contrasts. in the end i guess this place makes me feel comfortable and relaxed. that is a nice thing to come to work for.

Ecletic Beauty

Love the mixture of the industrial bones with nature-inspired finishes, and sopjisticated furnishing and art. It is a great environment with lots of personality and texture. Cheers to McCulley Design!

Capstone Office

Nicely done...feels and looks like what Pacific Coast office should...the materials and forms are nicely articulated and the Chang photo is a great statement.
