Washington Elementary, the only elementary school in the downtown San Diego is a hidden gem of Little Italy that was lost in hues of beige undertones. In an out of sight part of this lively neighborhood, this elementary school was screaming for color! With a few strokes of color, (18 colors to be exact) a whole new light and life has been given to Washington Elementary as a learning community asset. Articulating the nondescript 80’s & 90’s architecture by using deep, bright and inspirational tones to delineate the building forms gives them a fresh new identity, reflecting the new vision of Washington Elementary.

Onion. This structure resembles a motel six that was quickly converted to an elementary school. Unless there is a huge open space in the interior of the campus, this school is more like a detention center. The gate at the front door, terrible; the small school sign to the right of the photo needs to be redone. Dinky landscaping in front needs full commitment. Warm primary tones for the students and the space functions in secluding the students from the outside environment directly, but they are imprisoned indirectly due to lack of appropriate lighting. Natural light is needed to induce positive and productive students and overall wellbeing of staff.

This looks wonderful - congratulations on a job well done. Love the crayon box colours for the elementary school.

I drove by this area and saw the school last week. The new colors lit up the area and brought a new light to the area and especially the beautiful. I'm very glade quality design being brought to our education system. Hopefully inspire some of our young ones!

What a vibrant and lively transformation! The new color scheme really energizes the building and will brighten the minds of any student who enters. A vast improvement over the doldrums of the typical white and gray institution. Color is such an important part of child development and this design is sure to improve the well-being of the students.

Washington looks amazing. It's great to see it finally stand out in Little Italy and reflect the colors of our beautiful neighborhood. We always knew there was a quality education going on behind those walls - my daughters went there - but now it also looks like a wonderfully inviting place to go to school as well. Well done!

The colors and design are excellent--a wonderful place for children to see and enter. I wish my grandchildren could attend a school that looks like this!

Washington Elementary has never looked better! The new color scheme fits right in with Little Italy and is a vast improvement on the previous monotony of the building. I agree that this type of color revitalization should be done more often in SD schools and public buildings in general. :)

I have family in the area and frequently walk to my car on State street and never really noticed the school until recently. It really makes the whole street look nicer and more inviting! It must be fun for kids to be in that bright, fun environment.

I drive by Washington Elementary everyday for work. The new design and color scheme looks amazing. The school takes on a whole new appearance and looks 100% better. There should be more types of these color restoration projects in San Diego.
Thank You
Mike

The color scheme, graphic design and archetetchure are phenomenal. Catches the eye, but not too much, which makes it comfortable. It is the perfect learning environment for elementary level. Terrific job!
