mxd830 - creative spaces

"Mxd830 is an eco-friendly, infill, mixed-use building designed and built by local architect/developer Mike Burnett as part of his graduate degree thesis. The building was conceived and designed to support the diverse artist community of Golden Hill while helping revitalize the commercial corridor of 25th Street." -san diego daily transcript
May I suggest a stroll thru the courtyard instead of just a quick drive-by. This building comes alive inside with color and warmth, seems to contrast nicely the stark white minimal exterior shell.each design move is made with intention and the idea that each space considers hosting a creative user makes them fun, interesting and special. The residential and commercial blend so well it's tough to know which is what. The compositional low water landscaping helps reinforce how new development can still provide lush-looking grounds and still respect our desert location. This project really handles its location well, mitigating two very different neighbors. The busy gas station next to the freeway is quite a different experience than the historic home on its opposite side. The low profile massing of the building pays respect to this significant Irving Gill historic home next door and yet gives the street the needed storefront edge commonly found along a neighborhood commercial corridor.

what a welcomed addition!

As a resident of Golden Hill who drives by this project almost daily, it has become a positive and hopeful symbol of the urban renewal to come in the area. We couldn't have asked for a better start. Kudos to the architect/developers for their vision, insight, and respect for the neighborhood's heritage. This is a well performed balancing act.
