Utility cans

The city, SDG&E and Cox have been working on undergrounding the utilities in the Talmadge neighborhood. I think most of us were happy to hear the utility poles and wires would be removed, but we didn't realize that utility boxes and cans would be planted in our yards. A bit of an eyesore.

On the other hand, dogs like sniffing them. In some cases, creative neighbors have tried to hide the boxes with shrubs or make them look less objectionable by surrounding them with decorative plantings and rocks. Little things mean a lot.

Utility Cans

Onion. All utility cans across the US need a complete overhaul. There is no “design” here rather than pure functionality. These are true eyesores that pollute the serene flow of most neighborhoods. Oddly enough the utility cans really don’t “fit” the environment they are in, but the public has been trained so well that their peculiar positioning actually “fits” so to speak, they are a part of the design process. Despite the weak attempt with color, the intrinsic quality of the utility can has to camouflage within the environment, both in structure and logistically.

Talmadge Undergrownding.

The whole job is just about the ugliest damned thing I have ever seen. It will lower property values, and property taxes, too. The City cut its own throat by allowing this project to proceed.
