This City of San Diego project converted a 4-lane street with painted median into a two lane street with landscaped median and additional parking. It also converted conventional intersection controls at five intersections to modern roundabouts. The roundabouts allow the street to handle motor vehicle traffic demand with fewer lanes while keeping traffic moving at a steady but civilized pace. The project includes extensive landscaping supported by a maintenance assessment district that the community voted to impose on itself. It also includes neighborhood traffic calming features that discourage cut-through traffic on parallel residential streets. As a result, La Jolla Blvd. has become a much more inviting street for pedestrians and bicyclist, which in turn seems to have revived commercial activity along the street. A key component of making this project a success was the extensive pubic involvement that occurred in the planning phases of the project. The City of San Diego’s planning and capital improvement departments, and the 1st council district all deserve credit for the perseverance it took to make this happen.

Orchid. Beautiful conversion project that yielded remarkable solutions to design and functional problems. Not only handled the landscape design-functionality problem handled, at the same time, it included the residents in becoming responsible for their neighborhood. This gives the residents the gift of ownership of their area which ensures future maintenance. In combination with the calming features and providing inviting areas for pedestrians and bicyclist, this project was a very cerebral and psychological successful. A case study of the marriage of architecture and sociological themes implemented. This is architecture at its best. It works for the people.

Not in my eyes! These roundabouts are a nightmare for drivers and only served to further reduce access to La Jolla and it's beaches.
Reduced visibility and increased hazards and obstacles for drivers is the reality of it and does not justify the expense incurred by San Diego taxpayers for a minor aesthetic improvement. Bad idea!

I love the suggestions about repeating this along Torrey Pines. I'm not sure that it'd have the same effect though that they have had here in the Bird Rock area. The fact that people are saying these are horrible should go back in time about 5-8 years and see how 'bustling' this area was....it wasn't at all. Maybe that's what the nay sayers want...not sure. I can't believe all the retail that's happened in this area since the installation of these roundabouts. Contact your trusty council person and thank them for voting this project through and get them started on some more forward thinking development in our City!! :-)

The Birdrock Roundabouts are great for Birdrock. They have created a pleasant shopping village atmosphere, slow the traffic and created more on street parking.
Roundabouts are not a good idea for Torrey Pines Road. This major road way is not suited for
roundabouts to handle the 60,000 cars a day that pass through this entrance to La Jolla from the north. There is not enough public land for a large enough roundabout in any of the locations.

This is exactly what needs to be done in the Village on Torrey Pines Rd. Starting at Prospect down towards Girard Ave. We need to change the four lane road to a two lane with a center divider. You can add diagonal parking spaces on the coastal side of the street and vintage looking street lights down the center. It might even be nice to add a statue of the founder (I have seen a great photo of him by a tent surveying the land) of the Village "La Jolla Park Track 1887" under a real Torrey Pine tree at the Prospect round about. It would be nice to see some pride in the Village. Make it the Jewel again! This would definitely help control traffic while keeping a consistent flow, not to mention help tourism.

Please note that West Coast General Corporation was the contractor that built the roundabouts and they did a tremendous job. Two-way traffic was maintained during construction and they allowed for additional parking on La Jolla Blvd whenever possible. Pedestrian access was also provided. Great Job West Coast General!!!

Even though all construction sites are a mess, the area at Bird Rock was still functioning. And this was due to the contractors consideration of the businesses, neighbors and pedestrians. They did make a big effort to accommodate everyone.
