Planting seeds for 2009

It's never too early to start thinking about next year's potential Orchids & Onions! If you see a building that you always thought should be uprooted and put on a planet far, far away from here, then take a snap with the cellphone and nominate it now!!! Or if there is a building you pass by daily and think "That sure is a great building" - don't leave it to the last minute. Nominate it now and it will be in the running for next year's awards.

We want to know what you think of San Diego's built environment on a year round basis. Stay tuned for the quarterly online vote for Blooms & Bulbs - launching soon!

Bernar Venet Port Authority Art Exhibit

I'll take a crack at suggesting a nomination...first of 2009!!! So excited!!Low and behold.... it's an Orchid for Public Art!! As I run around the Embarcadero downtown, on a weekly basis or course, I see first hand all the art exhibits showcased around the waterfront. One I especially like that has caught my eye is new to San Diego as of November 1st. For the next year, San Diego is showcasing world reknowned steel sculture artist Bernar Venet with twelve of his large-scale corten steel structures. The commission is by Scott White Contemporary Art, in cooperation with the San Diego Unified Port District. As we all know, the Port has had it's fair share of spicy public opinion over the years. I'm not exactly sure if the Port would get praise for actually commissioning this...or maybe they get praise for just allowing the commission on their property. At any rate, this exhibit deserves some praise for sure. I recommend you take a walk around the Embarcadero Marina Parks..there are several over there. Also there is one at the corner of 6th and L at the Omni Hotel and Tin Fish and also there is a beautiful exhibit on Harbor Island in front of the Sheraton Hotel. Port Authority Art Exhibit

I've had my eye on these pieces as a submission for several months now. I've taken a couple pictures of the pieces on my runs. I really like the one over by the Sheraton Hotel on Harbor Island...very dramatic. As this year's O&O Co-Chair I highly encourage everyone to get involved and nominate that Orchid or Onion. We're also looking for sponsors for this year's program. Please pass the word around. We'll need all the help we can get to make this year's event as good or better than the previous years. -chris gustard
