ORCHID FOR INTERIOR DESIGN

Jury Comments: Our Mother got a makeover! The original building was modest and dutifully served the congregation since 1978. With the addition of a new entry, grand staircase and a complete renovation of the interior, new energy has been injected into the old building. The remodeled layout breaks from the rigidity of the original structure, rotating the processional axis by 45 degrees. Carefully positioned curved walls create a backlit backdrop for the altar. Much like in the Gothic cathedrals of old, the eye is drawn upward. An expressive folded ceiling reflects and diffuses plentiful natural light from the new skylights. Despite the challenges, a dynamic and vibrant worship space has emerged. One juror remarked “With a name like Our Mother of Confidence, it would be a sin not to award it an Orchid!”

OMC Remodel

I was involved as a parish committee member on this project. A core group of us met for seven years, from conception to finish, on this renovation and we all commend the architects for a wonderful response to our wishes and needs. Probably the most valuable piece of the project was just after we hired them, when the architects asked us just to dream and then talk about what we wanted the interior to say and do. The space is a living catechesis of our faith, and we are most grateful for it.

The reno is gorgeous. I haven't been since I was very young (last time was in 1972). I've been searching for some photos of what it used to look like (memories are all I've got) and stumbled upon this. Very beautiful!
