ORCHID FOR INTERIOR DESIGN
Jury Comments: Like the rebirth of the Mini Cooper a few years ago, this Mini – Pearl – dusts off and re-imagines the old Sportsman’s Lodge Motel in Point Loma. It’s a tiny place with only 23 rooms with a lobby/restaurant/bar smaller than the walk-in closets in most new homes. Every finely-textured square inch reflects a thoughtfulness for scale, color, light and mood. A perfect place to chill out by the pool -- they even show movies on the big screen. We do, however, miss the atomic-age motel sign. But on the other hand, the ultra-cozy Gem Room sports a mirrored ceiling. Cool, baby, cool!
Adaptive reuse of the old Sportsman's Lodge in Pt. Loma into the new Pearl Hotel + Restaurant. Reuse of the existing property built in 1960 in a neighborhood that needed redevelopment.
Finalist for Best Affordable Hotel in the 2008 Hospitality Design Magazine Awards ceremony/worldwide recognition. Interior design/project design is super strong. Blend of the past architecture with new medium of materials, etc to create a one of a kind property in San Diego.
We are very proud of the Pearl and the team that made it happen.
